Polaris
48x72" oil on panel
on display in Raritan, NJ
Roman mythology tells the story of Calisto and Arcus, a mother and son turned into bears and placed into the sky by Zeus for protection from Hera.
Now they are known as Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, constellations often used by lost travelers to find their way in the night. Polaris connects the two bears in the sky, for if you find one bear, Polaris will lead you to the other. This way, they never get lost themselves helping others back to safety.
This painting shows the allegorical representation of Polaris protecting Ursa Minor and ensures that the mother and son stay together through the cold arctic night.
